What is Group Therapy?
Group therapy is a way of bringing people together that maybe don't want one to one counselling, would like to share experiences with others and likewise, learn from other participants. Whilst free-flowing, open and honest discussions will be encouraged, facilitation by qualified and experienced therapists will ensure that a safe space and confidentiality are maintained.
Who is it For?
It is open to anyone over the age of 18 who would like to understand themselves better and gain a deeper insight into life's challenges and how they deal with them. The aim is that by understanding oneself better, confidence and self-esteem can increase.
What will sessions consist of?
Each session will be slight different but the first session starts with contracting and understanding confidentiality, with the creation of a safe space for all.
Sessions will be a mixture of theoretical understanding of how our 'selves' are developed, alongside creative activities that will allow individual expression and learning. It will involve interacting with your fellow participants and sharing and learning from each other.
Is Group Therapy the same as a Support Group?
No, it's not. Whilst group therapy will provide a source of support between the participants, there are some fundamental differences:
Group therapy will be facilitated by trained professionals whereas a support group may not be
Group therapy is often time-limited as opposed to being a long-term support group
Group therapy has a therapeutic purpose with outcome measures. It encourages participants to work at depth in a more learning and developmental environment
Group therapy is a closed group with a limited number of attendees. It doesn't offer a 'hop in, hop out' type of attendance that is often available within support groups
It is expected that members only meet within the group and not outside the group, which helps to maintain a safe and confidential space
